This tour begins with an early morning departure from Cusco. The route travels through the Vilcabamba valley, offering views of the changing Andean landscape as the vehicle ascends toward the mountains. The journey is a direct approach to the trailhead for one of the region’s well-known natural sites.

The first main stop is the village of Mollepata, where you will have breakfast. Following this break, a short drive continues to Soraypampa, located at an altitude of . Soraypampa serves as the official starting point for the trek. Here, you will prepare for the physical portion of the day’s activities.

The hike is a high-altitude trek toward two main points of interest. The trail first leads to Chakana, a viewpoint at with clear views of the Salkantay and Humantay mountains. After Chakana, the path continues to Humantay Lake, a body of water known for its turquoise color. After visiting the lake, you will hike back down to the starting point to return to Cusco.

Itinerary

DAY 1

CUSCO / SORAYPAMA / CUSCO

We leave Cusco very early in the morning from your Accommodation, adjust to its altitude by exploring through the Vilcabamba valley. We start 4:00 in our private vehicle driving toward Mollepata Village, the north site of Cusco, arriving then to Mollepata () after 2 hours approximately for our breakfast then a short drive till Soraypampa (), start point to hike toward Chakana (Inca sign of great value), () almost 3 hours hiking then turn to Humantay lake ().

Our guide provides you some recommendations to start the trek to Chakana (mist area) and Humantay Lake located in the Vilcabamba mountain range and close of Salkantay.

We start the hike to Chakana for approximately 3 hrs; surrounding a peaceful landscapes of Chakana area and the amazing views of Vilcabamba mountain range, Salkantay and Humantay then we reach Laguna Humantay we enjoy the beautiful turquoise lagoon. We continue 1.5 hours hiking on our way back to Mollepata our lunch spot then our convoy return us to Cusco around 7:00 p.m; We drop you at your hotel.

EXTRAS & UPGRADES

  • Humantay Lake Entrance Fee – $6 USD per person (~20 soles — Paid directly at the trailhead checkpoint upon arrival at Soraypampa. Cash only. This fee is not included in the base tour price and must be paid on the day)
  • Horseback Riding to the Lake – $20–$25 USD per person (A 30-minute horse ride from Soraypampa to the lake, managed by local Andean handlers, for those who find the steep 1.5-hour ascent too demanding. Cash only, paid directly to the horse handlers at the trailhead)
  • Trekking Poles Rental – $5 USD per pair (Highly recommended for the steep 440 m / 1,443 ft ascent to the lake. Available for rent at the trailhead or from our office in Cusco the evening before departure)
  • Giant Swing at Soraypampa – $3 USD per person (~10 soles — A fun and memorable swing with jaw-dropping views of the Salkantay Mountain range, located right at the base camp. Cash only, payable on-site)
  • Andean Ceremony & Offering at the Lake – $15 USD per person (Humantay Lake is considered a sacred Apu by local Quechua communities. Join a traditional Pachamama offering ceremony led by a local shaman at the lakeshore — a deeply spiritual and authentic Andean experience. Please request at the time of booking)
  • Upgrade to Private Transport – $40 USD per vehicle (Standard service runs on group shared transport. Upgrade to an exclusive private vehicle for you and your group for maximum comfort on the ~3-hour drive from Cusco)
  • Overnight at Soraypampa Lodge – from $35 USD per person (Stay overnight in a basic lodge or cabin right at the Soraypampa base camp at the foot of the Salkantay mountain range. Wake up early for a sunrise hike to the lake in total solitude. Meals available separately on-site)
  • Combo Loyalty Discount – $10 USD off (If you have previously booked any other tour with us — such as the Salkantay Trek, Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain, or any other experience — you qualify for a special promotional rate on this tour.   • Hotel Pick-Up Outside Historic Center – $10 USD per vehicle (Standard pick-up covers hotels and hostels within Cusco’s city center. A small surcharge applies for Airbnbs or accommodations located outside this zone)

Pricing & Availability – Humantay Lake Day Trip

The Humantay Lake Day Trip departs daily, year-round, with hotel pickup between 4:00–5:00 AM and return to Cusco around 5:00–6:30 PM. Daily departures are available and can be booked up to one day in advance. A minimum of 2 travelers is required for a guaranteed departure. Best season: May to September (dry season). A minimum of 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco is strongly recommended before the hike, as the lake sits at 4,200 m / 13,780 ft above sea level.

DISCOUNTS

  • Students (18–25 years old): $5 USD discount. A valid ISIC card or university ID is required at the time of booking. Information required: university name, student name, photo, and expiration date.
  • Under 18 years old: $5 USD discount. Please send a copy of your passport at the time of booking.
  • Children under 9 years old: Tour service fee still applies. This hike involves a steep 1.5-hour ascent to 4,200 m — not recommended for children under 8 without prior high-altitude experience. Horseback riding is available as an alternative.

Important Notes: The Humantay Lake entrance fee (~20 soles / $6 USD) is always paid separately in cash at the trailhead and is not included in any base price. The steep ascent from Soraypampa to the lake takes approximately 1.5 hours and involves a 440 m / 1,443 ft elevation gain — the most physically demanding section of the day. Horses are available at the base for those who need assistance. There are no ATMs along the route — bring small bills in Peruvian soles or US dollars. Tips for your guide and driver are optional but always appreciated.
