Day 1: Cusco – Qesiuno – Alqatarwi. The day begins with a drive from Cusco through the Vilcanota Valley to the trailhead at Qesiuno. From there, you will hike to the high-altitude campsite at Alqatarwi for the overnight stay.
Day 2: Alqatarwi – Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) – Cusco. An early morning hike takes you to the highest point, the Vinicunca pass, for sunrise views. After visiting Rainbow Mountain, you will descend and return to Cusco by vehicle.

DAY 1

CUSCO/QESIUNO/ALQATARWI.

we leave Cusco early morning, adjust to its altitude by exploring through the Vilcanota Valley and small villages, colonial church, and its small inca site, a short drive from here takes us the beginning of the trek Qesiuno ( $4300 m, 14107 ft$ ), where we manned by Quechua-speaking Inca descendants, after a short break and a snack. Our hike continued through small lagoons and our lunch spot, from here we continue on to our camping and overnight in ALQATARWI ( $4600 m, 15091 ft$ ). We set off to explore the area for a while

DAY 2

AUSANGATE RAINBOW MOUNTAIN PERU TREK/CUSCO.

This is the challenging day but the most rewarding of the hike, rise early on the final morning and see the sunrise, spend the day exploring this huge and new landscape. A 3hr hike takes us to the highest pass of the trek, Vinicunca, The Rainbow Mountain (approx $5100 masl$ ), with imposing views over the AUSANGATE range, raising over the horizon, enjoy this magic and spiritual mountains just in front of you. a gift of the Pacha Mama (mother earth). From here our road easier hiking down, we head to Qesiuno then to Cusco.

Rainbow Mountain 2-Day Trek

This 2-day trek costs $297 USD per person and can be scheduled on any date, provided we have a minimum of two hikers.

The price includes a personal pack horse to carry your belongings (up to 7 kg), for which we’ll provide a duffel bag. We also include a large Eureka 4-person tent for every two trekkers.

PERSONAL

Long sleeved shirts: Bring two or three for layering and protection from the strong sun.
Walking pants: One pair of comfortable, durable hiking pants.
Polar or thermal clothing: Essential for the cold, especially for the evening and early morning.
Sweater and Warm jacket: A fleece sweater and an insulated, windproof jacket are necessary.
Thermal sleeping clothes: Temperatures at the campsite will be very cold, likely below freezing.
Hiking boots: Waterproof boots with good ankle support, properly broken-in.
Waterproof pants and jacket: Be prepared for rain or snow at any time.
Cotton pants: Comfortable to wear at the campsite before and after hiking.
Wool gloves: To protect your hands from the extreme cold.
Scarf: A neck gaiter or scarf is useful for warmth and wind protection.
Wool socks for sleeping: Bring a dedicated thick, warm pair of socks for the tent.
Hat or cap for the sun: A wide-brimmed hat is best for sun protection during the day.

PERSONAL EQUIPMENT

Sleeping Bag: A four-season bag rated to at least $- 1 0^{\circ} C$ ( $1 4^{\circ} F$ ) is required. Can be rented.
Memory Cards: Bring extras, as the cold can drain batteries quickly.
Toiletries and first aid: Include personal medications, blister treatment, and pain relievers.
Binoculars: To get a better view of the landscape and any wildlife.
Sunglasses: Essential for eye protection from high-altitude UV rays and snow glare.
Sunscreen: High SPF is critical due to the thin atmosphere.
Lip balm: With SPF to prevent chapped lips.
Hiking poles: Highly recommended to provide stability on steep and uneven terrain.
Flashlight: A headlamp is best to keep your hands free at the campsite.
Pocket knife: A small multi-tool can be useful.
Bottle or canteen: Carry at least 2 liters of water capacity.
Plastic bag: To keep electronics dry and to separate dirty or wet clothes.
Small backpack: A 25-35 liter daypack to carry your water, snacks, jacket, and personal items.

Rainbow Mountain 2-Day Trek Guide

When to Visit The best and most popular time to do this trek is during the dry season, from April to October. These months offer a higher probability of clear skies and stable weather, although conditions in the high mountains can change at any time.

Climate Expect extreme high-altitude mountain conditions. The sun is very strong during the day, but it is also very cold, especially when cloudy or windy. Nighttime temperatures will be below freezing. Snow is possible at any time of year.

How to Prepare for the Tour Excellent physical condition is necessary. Focus on cardiovascular fitness (running, cycling, hiking) for several weeks before your trip. You must be prepared for steep ascents at very high altitudes where oxygen levels are low.

How to Acclimatize Proper acclimatization is critical for safety and enjoyment. You must spend at least three full days in a high-altitude city like Cusco ( $3, 400 m$ ) before starting this trek. During this time, rest, drink plenty of water and coca tea, and avoid heavy meals and alcohol.

Local People The region is home to indigenous Quechua communities who maintain a traditional lifestyle based on herding llamas and alpacas. Be respectful when passing through their lands. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Recommendations

Walk at a slow, steady pace (“pole pole”) to conserve energy and manage the altitude.
Stay hydrated by drinking more water than you normally would.
Use hiking poles for support on steep and uneven ground.
Dress in layers so you can easily adjust to changing temperatures.

Recommended Age Due to the extreme altitude and physical demands, this trek is recommended for experienced hikers and very fit individuals, typically 16 years of age and older. It is not suitable for children or individuals with cardiovascular or respiratory health issues.

How cold does it get at the campsite? Temperatures at the Alqatarwi campsite frequently drop below freezing at night, potentially reaching $- 5^{\circ} C$ ( $2 3^{\circ} F$ ) or colder, depending on the time of year.

What are the toilet facilities like? A portable toilet tent is provided for the group. The conditions are basic, as it is a remote campsite.

Will I have to carry all of my luggage? No. You will carry a small daypack with your daily essentials. Horses will carry a duffel bag with your personal items (up to $7 kg$ ) and all camping equipment.

What is the main advantage of the 2-day tour over the 1-day tour? The 2-day tour allows you to camp overnight and reach Rainbow Mountain for sunrise, which means you experience the site with far fewer people and in better morning light.

Do I need to bring my own sleeping bag? Yes, a sleeping bag is required for the overnight camp. You can bring your own or rent one from the tour operator.

What kind of food is served on the trek? Meals are prepared by a cook and typically include a mix of Peruvian dishes and Western-style food. Vegetarian and other dietary requirements can be accommodated if requested in advance.

Is there an emergency horse? Yes, an emergency horse accompanies the group. It can be used if a trekker is feeling unwell or is unable to keep pace.

What happens in case of severe altitude sickness? The guides are trained in first aid and carry an emergency oxygen bottle. If a person is suffering from severe symptoms, they will be evacuated to a lower altitude with the help of the staff and emergency horse.

Are there any age restrictions for this trek? While there is no official age limit, this trek is very challenging due to the extreme altitude. It is not recommended for young children or individuals who are not in excellent physical condition.

What happens if the weather is bad? The guide will assess the conditions for safety. In case of extreme weather like a heavy snowstorm, the itinerary may be altered or cut short for the safety of the group.
